I have been working on the "Babugeri" exhibition since 2002. It is a study of masquerade games in Bulgarian lands. They originated in ancient pagan times - since the time of the Thracians. I try to show my reading of the mask as a symbol of the miraculous power that drives evil demons, devils and karaconjuli out of life. The Kuker ritual grants long life to people, prosperity in the home and fertility in the fields.
These are oil paintings, mixed media and computer posters. They are from my recent research on the kuker and survakar games. I am very impressed by the extraordinary costumes and masks of the kukers. The sound of their clappers and chans echoed far across time and space. It is also present in the authentic vats embedded in the paintings. So I catch the melody through the bagras and clappers. So different and lovely are these pagan "living totems" that I am mentally transported into the atmosphere of the sacrament. I will be happy if my paintings from the BABUGERI cycle recreate the power of this ritual.
